“Just search it” has quietly become “just ask an AI”, and for a lot of people the question is which AI to ask. Perplexity built its whole product around sourced answers. ChatGPT added web search and a deep research mode to an assistant that already did everything else. We ran both through the same set of research tasks for two weeks to see which one you should trust with facts.

How we tested

We used 40 real questions across four categories: current events, product and pricing lookups, technical documentation questions, and open-ended “give me an overview of X” briefs. For each answer we checked whether the cited sources existed, whether they supported the claim, and whether the answer was current. We also ran five longer briefs through each tool’s deep research mode.

Quick sourced answers: Perplexity wins

For the first three categories, Perplexity’s design advantage is clear. Every answer leads with sources, the citations are numbered inline, and clicking through is frictionless. When an answer was wrong, it was usually obvious why: the source was outdated or the summary over-reached, and we could see it immediately.

ChatGPT with search enabled gets similar results, but the sources feel secondary to the prose. It is more likely to blend a sourced claim with a plausible-sounding unsourced one in the same paragraph, which is exactly the failure mode you do not want in research. It also sometimes answers without searching if it believes it already knows, and it is not always right about that.

Score on our 30 factual questions: Perplexity was fully correct and well-sourced more often, and its errors were easier to spot. ChatGPT was close behind, with slightly more confident errors.

Deep research reports: ChatGPT wins

Turn the question into a project (“compare the pricing models of the five leading AI video tools and tell me which is best for a small agency”) and the picture flips. ChatGPT’s deep research mode runs longer, reads more sources, and produces a structured report with sections, a comparison table and an actual recommendation. Perplexity’s deep research is faster and perfectly usable, but its reports are thinner and more list-like.

The caveat with both: a long report with 30 citations looks authoritative, and that is precisely when you need to spot-check. We found at least one citation per report, in both tools, that did not say quite what the summary claimed.

Freshness

Both tools handle breaking news well. Perplexity’s results were more consistently from the last few days when recency mattered; ChatGPT occasionally leaned on an older source that ranked well. For anything time-sensitive, Perplexity’s focus on recency is an advantage.

Reasoning and synthesis

Where a question needs reasoning rather than retrieval (working through trade-offs, applying a framework, explaining why something is true), ChatGPT is the stronger thinker. Perplexity is an excellent librarian; ChatGPT is a better analyst. The ideal workflow uses Perplexity to gather the facts and ChatGPT or Claude to reason about them.

Everything else

This is not a close contest. ChatGPT also writes, codes, analyses data, talks and generates images. Perplexity has added features over time (file uploads, spaces, a browser), but it is a research tool first. If you can only pay for one subscription and research is not your main job, ChatGPT’s breadth wins. Our full ChatGPT review covers the rest of the product.

Pricing

Both charge $20 a month for their main paid tier. Perplexity’s free tier is generous for search and includes a limited number of advanced searches per day. ChatGPT’s free tier includes search as well, so the free experience is more comparable than it used to be.

Who should pick Perplexity

  • You want a search engine replacement with citations on every claim.
  • You check facts, prices and news many times a day.
  • You want the fastest path from question to sourced answer.

Who should pick ChatGPT

  • Your research questions turn into multi-step projects and reports.
  • You want reasoning and synthesis, not just retrieval.
  • You need one tool for research, writing and everything else.

Verdict

Perplexity is the better place to ask a factual question. ChatGPT is the better place to run a research project. If your work involves a lot of both, the two complement each other well, and the combined cost is still less than one afternoon of chasing a bad citation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity more accurate than ChatGPT?

For factual questions with a clear answer on the web, Perplexity's citation-first design makes errors easier to catch, and we found its answers slightly more often correct. For reasoning-heavy questions, ChatGPT is stronger.

Does ChatGPT cite sources?

Yes, when web search is active. Its deep research mode produces reports with inline citations. Without search enabled, it answers from memory and does not cite.

Is Perplexity Pro worth it?

If you run many searches a day and want the strongest models, unlimited deep research runs and file uploads, yes. Casual users will be fine on the free tier.
