Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, and in 2026 it is the strongest option for anyone whose working day runs through Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and Chrome. It is less polished than ChatGPT and writes less naturally than Claude, but it reaches into your Google data, generates images and video, and on the Google AI Pro plan comes bundled with 5 TB of storage for $19.99 a month. That combination makes it the best-value paid assistant for Google users. This review looks at what Gemini does, what each plan includes, and where it falls short.
What Gemini is
Gemini is both a model family and a product. The product is the Gemini app on the web, Android and iOS, plus the Gemini features built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Chrome and Google’s other apps. You can chat with it, upload files (up to 10 per prompt, 100 MB each), talk to it with Gemini Live, point your phone camera at something and ask about it, generate images and video, and run Deep Research reports that browse dozens of sources.
On the paid AI Pro plan, the main model is Gemini 3.1 Pro, alongside the faster Flash models (Gemini 3.8 Flash arrived in September 2026). Google announced its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon on 30 September 2026, but at the time of writing it is limited to trusted testers and is not in the app for general users. Google ships changes fast, so expect the model names below to move.
Gemini also includes Canvas, a side-by-side editor for documents and code with live preview; Gemini Notebook, the research notebook tool formerly called NotebookLM; and “skills”, reusable instructions that replaced Gems on 30 September 2026.

Since May 2026, Google measures usage by compute rather than message counts. Limits refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, which is now the same basic model ChatGPT and Claude use. The difference is that Google’s plans are built around Google One storage. If you already pay for 2 TB of Google storage, AI Pro costs only a little more than your current bill and adds the assistant, which no rival can match.
Students get a better deal still: eligible US college students can claim 12 months of AI Pro free (redeem by 31 December 2026), and students outside the US get AI Plus (Google’s student offer).
For businesses, Gemini is bundled into Google Workspace plans rather than sold as an add-on: Business Starter is $7 per user per month on an annual plan and Business Standard is $14 (Workspace pricing). If your company already pays for Workspace, you probably already have Gemini.
Gemini inside Google Workspace and Chrome
This is Gemini’s real advantage. With Google apps connected, Gemini can find an email thread, summarise a long Doc, draft a reply in Gmail, pull figures into Sheets, or use your Drive files as sources for a Deep Research report. Nothing else does this as smoothly for Google users, because nothing else has the same access to your data.
Gemini in Chrome adds a browsing assistant that can read the page you are on and, with auto browse, carry out multi-step tasks on websites. Scheduled actions let it run a prompt on a timetable, such as a weekly summary of unread newsletters. Third-party connected apps have expanded too, with Airtable, Linear, Adobe, Otter.ai and OpenTable among the recent additions.
Connecting Google apps is opt-in, and you should think about which ones you need. The convenience is real, but so is the scope of what you are granting.
Writing and reasoning
Gemini writes clean, competent prose, and Gemini 3.1 Pro handles analysis, structured summaries and step-by-step reasoning well. Its default output leans on headings and bullet points more than Claude’s, and it needs more steering to match a specific voice. If writing quality is your main criterion, our Claude review explains why we still prefer Claude for that job. A good set of style instructions, as in our guide on how to write better prompts, closes much of the gap, and skills let you save those instructions for reuse.
The 1M-token context window on AI Pro and Ultra matters for long material: whole contracts, research papers, codebases or hour-long videos (video up to an hour on paid plans, five minutes on free). Free users get a 32K context, which is small for document work.
Research: Deep Research and Gemini Notebook
Deep Research is one of Gemini’s strongest features. You ask a question, it proposes a research plan, browses many sources and returns a structured report with citations. Its unique trick is that it can draw on your Gmail, Drive and Chat as well as the web, which is useful for internal briefings. As with any AI research tool, click the sources before you rely on a claim; our Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research comparison explains how to verify AI-cited answers.
Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is the better tool when you already have your sources. You upload documents and it answers only from them, with citations back to the passage. Paid plans raise its limits.
Images, video and Gemini Live
Gemini generates and edits images with Google’s Nano Banana image models, and paid plans add video generation in the app through Google’s Gemini Omni models. Flow, Google’s filmmaking tool, comes with monthly credits on AI Pro (1,000) and Ultra. This is a clear differentiator: Claude does not generate images at all, and ChatGPT does not generate video since OpenAI shut down Sora in April 2026.
Gemini Live is Google’s voice mode. It is free on Android and iOS, including camera and screen sharing, so you can point your phone at a broken appliance or share your screen while filling in a form and talk it through.
Coding
Gemini is a capable coding assistant in chat, and Canvas previews small web apps instantly. For developers, AI Pro also raises limits on Google’s developer tools: the Jules coding agent, Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist. Google does not publish exact numbers for those limits. If coding is your main use, compare it with the options in our getting-started guide to AI coding assistants.
Privacy
Gemini’s defaults are less private than they could be. On personal accounts, the Keep Activity setting (formerly Gemini Apps Activity) is on by default and auto-deletes after 18 months; you can change that to 3 or 36 months or turn it off. A sample of chats is reviewed by humans, and reviewed chats are disconnected from your account but kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity. With activity off, or in a temporary chat, Google still keeps conversations for up to 72 hours, and temporary chats are not used for training (Gemini Privacy Hub).
Workspace business accounts are treated differently: chats are not reviewed by humans or used to train models (Workspace privacy). If you handle sensitive work, use a Workspace account rather than a personal one.
What we don’t like
- Constant change. Google renamed NotebookLM, replaced Gems with skills (Gems close on personal accounts in November 2026), cut the AI Plus price and reshaped Ultra into two tiers in the space of a few months. Model access per tier shifts often enough that you should check the plan page before upgrading.
- A thin free tier for documents. The 32K context and standard limits are fine for questions, but not for long files.
- Privacy defaults that favour Google over you, as covered above.
Who should use Gemini
- Google Workspace users who want an assistant that can see their mail, files and calendar.
- Anyone who needs storage anyway. AI Pro’s 5 TB makes the subscription close to free if you were going to pay for storage.
- Creators who want image and video generation in the same app as their assistant.
- Students in the US, while the free year of AI Pro is on offer.
Who should look elsewhere
- Writers and editors will get better prose from Claude.
- People who want the broadest, most polished all-round assistant should read our ChatGPT review.
- Privacy-sensitive users on personal accounts should either change the defaults or choose a different tool.
Verdict
Gemini scores 4 out of 5. For Google users it is the most useful assistant available, because it works where your email and documents already are, and AI Pro is the best-value subscription in the category once you count the storage. It generates images and video, has a huge context window on paid plans and an excellent Deep Research mode. It falls just short of ChatGPT and Claude on writing quality and polish, and Google’s habit of reshuffling plans, models and features makes it harder to depend on. Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini free?
Yes. The free Gemini app includes chat, Gemini Live voice with camera and screen sharing on mobile, and image generation, with standard usage limits and a 32K-token context window. Paid plans raise limits and context and add video generation.
Is Google AI Pro worth it?
If you use Google services daily, usually yes. At $19.99 a month (at the time of writing) you get Gemini 3.1 Pro, a 1M-token context window, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, 4x the free limits and 5 TB of storage. If you already pay for 2 TB of Google storage, the upgrade costs little extra.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
Not overall. ChatGPT has the broader, more polished feature set. Gemini wins on Google integration, storage bundled with the plan, long context and video generation. Pick Gemini if your work lives in Google Workspace.
Does Google use my Gemini chats for training?
On personal accounts, chats saved with Keep Activity on can be used to improve Google's products and a sample is reviewed by humans. Temporary chats are not used for training. Workspace business accounts are not human-reviewed or used for training.
What is the difference between Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra?
Plus ($4.99) doubles free limits and adds 400 GB of storage and a 128K context. Pro ($19.99) gives 4x limits, Gemini 3.1 Pro, a 1M context and 5 TB. Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99) adds Deep Think and 5x or 20x the Pro limits for heavy users.
